New SFO Control Tower is State-of-the-Art

This week San Francisco International Airport turns over its new control tower to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA will spend a year outfitting the 221-foot, torch-like, flared cylinder with its systems, testing them and training controllers. The concrete spine of the tower is tied, with steel cables, to a 7-foot thick mat foundation, which is supported by 140-foot deep piers that reach the bedrock below. The tower contains two dampers, each 37,400 pounds, which help the shaft to remain still in high winds and to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake. The FAA provided the majority of the $120 million dollars needed for project.

Passengers flying out of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport have been accustomed to a unique additional step to reaching their gate when trying to catch a flight. Instead of being dropped off in front of the airport and walking inside to receive one’s boarding pass and go through security, travelers flying through Billy Bishop Airport must take a 90-second ferry ride across Lake Ontario to reach their gate. Billy Bishop Airport is located on an island in Lake Ontario, located two miles from the downtown area. While many passengers enjoy the ferry ride, others have complained that the quarter-hourly crossings cause a lot of stress for passengers trying to make their flight.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are hoping to pick a group of winning bidders for the La Guardia airport replacement this spring.  New York Governor Andrew Cuomo addressed the outdated, undersized airport in his State of the State address on Wednesday.  He cited the fact that La Guardia is currently ranked the worst airport in America as the main reason the Port Authority needs to finally award a contract to redesign the existing terminal.  He even mentioned that he would like to take political ownership of the project to ensure it gets completed.
