The dynamic analysis of dam-fluid-foundation interaction is of vital importance in engineering practice. Westergaard originally developed analytical expressions to compute the hydrodynamic pressure on a dam with vertical upstream face subjected to seismic ground motions. With advances in computer technology and the advent of finite element analysis, the numerical analysis of dams, with software such as DIANA, has become easier and faster.
This paper highlights the capabilities of DIANA to consider the effects of fluid compressibility and foundation flexibility. This is one of a collection of white papers written by staff members at TNO DIANA BV which are available for download on this website.
