The Willis Tower Skydeck is one of the most popular and unique tourist attractions in Chicago. The Skydeck features four boxes known as The Ledge that allows visitors to step outside of the Willis Tower and look down at the street below. The view of the city from 1,353 feet is fantastic, and on a clear day one can see as far as the Wisconsin border. While the first steps onto The Ledge are scary and exciting at the same time, one California family had a bigger scare than usual when they first experienced the Ledge.
The two brothers and two cousins were walking on the Ledge for 30 to 45 seconds before the glass below the family's feet appeared to crack (and sounded like it was cracking). However, what was cracking was actually a protective layer covering the glass that was designed to prevent scratches on the Ledge’s glass. While the cracking of the protective layer scared the family standing on the ledge, it did not compromise the structural integrity of the box. The Ledge was closed down yesterday for a routine inspection as workers replaced the cracked protective layer, but the Skydeck is still open. The Ledge is expected to reopen soon, most likely Friday morning.
