- Description
- This work presents a formulation for non linear static analysis of rigid block models. The objective of this work is to develop a tool for the structural assessment of historical
masonry constructions. Rigid block models have proven to be effective for the analysis of both,
simplified models and macro models of unreinforced masonry elements and structures. This
modelling strategy captures well the proneness of masonry to localised cracking and is numerically efficient in the sense of requiring significantly less degrees of freedom compared to finite element models. The formulation uses numerical integration at interfaces and classical
non linear solution techniques. The use of this strategy in the analysis of a previously studied
masonry wall enlightens a number of its strengths and weaknesses. Work is in progress and
more elaborated constitutive models have to be included for both, tension and compression
behaviour. Also, we need to implement more sophisticated and efficient non linear analysis
techniques in order to improve the performance of the numerical tool.

- Assessment of a type of post-tensioned masonry walls system for dwelling construction in seismic prone areas

- Book Title / Journal: The 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, Lisbon, Portugal, Paper No. 2958
- Year: 2012 , Volume: , Series:
- Structure types ; Masonry Structures
- Description
- This work reports the results of an experimental campaign on a type of dry jointed and prestressed masonry. The
campaign is part of a larger project with the main objective of to develop an innovative wall construction system
for economical dwelling in seismic prone areas of underdeveloped countries. The campaign tested 12 stack bond
prisms and 6 regular bond prisms, in order to measure the strength and Young modulus of the material under
axial compression and to observe the failure modes. Six wallets, postensioned in the head joints direction were
tested in order to determine the diagonal compression strength, the shear modulus, and to observe the failure
mode. Under these simple tests, the proposed material behaves adequately; in particular, the shear failure mode
presents a very large displacement capacity.

- Vulnerability assessment of churches at Colima by 3D limit analysis models

- Book Title / Journal: In D. D’Ayala & E. Fodde (eds.), Structural Analysis of Historic Construction, Taylor & Francis Group, London,
- Year: 2008 , Volume: , Series:
- Earthquake engineering
- Description
- This work presents the vulnerability assessment of two churches at the state of Colima by means
of 3D rigid block models, using a limit analysis approach. The paper contains a description of the buildings and
the damage they suffered during the 2003 earthquake. The 3D models were elaborated on the basis of macroblocks defined according to the damage observed after the earthquake and also, taking into account the typical
failure mechanisms in churches reported in the literature. The limit analyses were carried out with a software
already tested and validated elsewhere. The results show that the limit analysis approach with rigid block models
is a valuable tool for the identification of critical failure mechanisms, their associated failure multipliers and, in
a global fashion, for the vulnerability assessment of historical churches. The results also indicate that empirical
methods provide a good estimation of the vulnerability level of this buildings type.
