On January 31, 2025, significant seismic activity began in the Aegean Sea, between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos, Greece. Over 500 undersea earthquakes have been recorded, raising concerns due to the presence of the Santorini volcano. Scientists are currently analyzing the phenomenon and debating whether it is linked to volcanic activity. The strongest earthquake recorded so far was a 4.9-magnitude tremor that struck the region yesterday.
As a precaution, all schools in the affected area have been closed, and thousands of residents have been evacuated. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has urged people to remain calm and follow civil protection guidelines, advising them to avoid crowded indoor spaces and areas prone to rockslides. Additionally, hotels have been instructed to empty their swimming pools to reduce the risk of structural damage in the event of further seismic activity.
In response, the Fire Service deployed a 26-member rescue team, along with a search-and-rescue dog, to the island on Sunday. They have set up yellow tents inside a basketball court as a staging area in case of an emergency.
