The Pertamina Energy tower located in Jakarta, Indonesia will become the world’s first skyscraper for which energy generation is the primary focus of the design. Pertamina is Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas company and they will use the building for their headquarters when it is completed in 2020.
Skidmore, Owings, & Merrell designed a wind funnel to sit on top of the 99-story, 1739 foot tall structure. The wind funnel is expected to generate up to 25% of the energy needed to operate the building. Also, SOM designed a curved façade for the building to mitigate solar heat demand and thus decrease energy and water demand throughout the year. In addition to accommodating over 20,000 Pertamina employees once finished, the tower will also feature a 5,000 person mosque, a performing arts center, and exterior parks and gardens. The Pertamina Energy Tower sits on 5.7 hectares of land and is expected be a “model of sustainability and efficiency, as well as collaborative workplace design” according to Skidmore, Owings & Merrell director Scott Duncan. No estimates are available for the cost of the building.
