On Tuesday 9th of April at 09.48 GMT, Indonesia's eastern region experienced a 6.6 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was near Halmahera Island in North Maluku province, at a depth of approximately 35km. Despite the magnitude of the quake, no tsunami warning was issued.
Reports as of present, indicate that there were no damages or injuries following the earthquake. Although, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reassured that there was no threat of a tsunami resulting from the seismic activity in the Molucca Sea, however, Indonesia's geophysics agency cautioned residents in nearby areas to stay alert for potential aftershocks.
It should be mentioned that Indonesia is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", and thus it faces frequent seismic events due to its location. Specifically, it is located along an arc of intense tectonic plate interactions stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
