On Sunday, June 8, at approximately 8:00 a.m. local time, a strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located about 170 km east of Bogotá, near the municipality of Paratebueno in Cundinamarca, at a depth of 10 km.
Although the earthquake was strong and felt in several cities, including Medellín, Cali, and Manizales, fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. In Bogotá, eyewitnesses reported buildings shaking, prompting residents to flee into the streets and gather in open areas such as parks out of fear.
According to Bogota’s security department, emergency teams were deployed to assess damage to buildings and provide assistance as needed. Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan stated that all emergency services had been activated.
It is worth noting that Colombia lies within the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific to South America.
