The Department of Education (DepEd) in Bicol has reported damage to a school in Catanduanes following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Bagamanoc town on Wednesday. The earthquake's epicenter was located offshore near Bagamanoc town, with a tectonic origin and a depth of 38km.
During an interview, architect Deo Moreno, DepEd Bicol's Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) focal person, explained that a classroom at Sta. Rosa Elementary School in Viga West suffered structural damage, including cracks in the walls while he stated that currently, the classroom is not in use due to the cracks. For the safety of the students and staff, the entry is prohibited. In the meantime, a temporary learning shelter has been set up for the displaced students.
The cost of the damage is not yet known since it’s too early to be determined as the evaluation continues. However, a reserve fund of PHP140 million is available for the school's immediate needs.
