On Friday, May 30, around 3 p.m. local time, a concrete bridge over the Rojotrekha Canal in Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh, collapsed following heavy rainfall. As a result, road access to the villages of Khaskandi and Nolbuniyakandi was severed, disrupting the lives of thousands of residents.
Locals reported that the bridge was constructed only a few years ago and served as a vital route for approximately 2,000 to 2,500 people from the Khaskandi and Nolbuniyakandi areas who relied on it for their daily commute.
According to authorities, the collapse was caused by heavy rain and erosion around the bridge’s approach road. Specifically, the northern approach gave way due to soil erosion, leading to the collapse and cutting off the only direct connection between the two villages.
The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Munshiganj Sadar, Md Mahbubur Rahman, stated that authorities are currently gathering information about the incident and discussions are already underway to restore access as quickly as possible.
