The roof of a large building collapsed on Sunday night when the firefighters were engaged in combatting flames in a commercial business district in Van Nuys. The structure accommodated textile businesses and a church. Despite the fire being fueled by textiles, it did not extend to nearby businesses while there were no people in the building at the time.
Initially, firefighters entered the building to ventilate the roof, but ultimately had to battle the fire from outside due to the roof collapse. Upon firefighters' arrival, flames were reaching approximately 30 feet from the building. Approximately 2 hours and 39 minutes later, more than 100 firefighters successfully extinguished the fire in the 6400 block of Van Nuys Boulevard. Immediate details regarding the fire's origin, reported around 9:30 a.m., were not available.
