Calculation Example – Critical load.

A solid rod has a diameter of 20 mm and is 600 mm long. It is made of a material that can be modeled by the stress–strain diagram shown in the figure below. If it is used as a pin-supported column, determine the critical load.

Determine the minimum diameter of the rod. The axial tensile force is P=10KN. The allowable stresses in tension and shear is 100MPa and 40MPa.

Calculation Example – Rod loading

Calculate the internal normal forces at points A,B,C for the rod which is loaded with the forces shown.

Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the cantilever beam (units KN,m).

Calculate the internal forces for the cantilever beam with the uniform loading q=10KN/m.

A rectangular column (400mmX400mm) is constructed of concrete and four steel reinforcing rebars. An axial force of 1000KN is subjected on the column. What is the diameter of the steel bars if the ¼ of the load is transferred to the steel bars and ¾ is transferred to the concrete? ( EST=200GPa, Ec=25GPa)

Calculate the max stress because of torsional moment on the outer layer of a steel hollow rod when two forces act on it from a distance of 100mm from the center.
