Average shear stress in pressure vessel

A pressure-vessel head is fabricated by gluing the circular plate to the end of the vessel. If the vessel sustains an internal pressure of 500 kPa, determine the average shear stress in the glue.

Solution

The force that is normal to the vessel’s head is P = τανg(2π)(0.225) * (0.01) where τανg is the average shear stress.

SFy = 0 -> π(0.225)2*500*10- τανg(2π)(0.225)*(0.01) = 0

τανg = 11.25Mpa
